Juan Palacios is a film director, researcher, and cinematographer with a background in Environmental Studies and an MA in Film (cum laude) from the Netherlands Film Academy. He has written and directed several feature films spanning observational documentary, essay film, the field notebook, and science fiction, with particular attention to territory in its physical, cultural, and affective dimensions.

In 2016, he self-produced his first feature documentary film, PEDALÓ, which was awarded at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. He used that prize money to produce his next project, MESETA (INLAND), a sensorial journey through the "empty" landscapes of inland Spain. It was awarded at CPH:DOX 2019, L'Alternativa 2019, and the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema in Pesaro 2019, among others.

His feature documentary, As the Tide Comes In (Før Stormen), had its world premiere in IDFA's International Competition, and it was the opening film at Visions du Reel 2024. It has also been shown at CPH:DOX, Thessaloniki Film Festival, True False, Gothenburg Film Festival, and Camerimage, among more than 60 others. It had a wide cinema release in Denmark, and it has been nominated for the Robert Awards (Danish Oscars) and the Bodil Award. It won the Best Film of Spanish Cinema and Best Director of Spanish Cinema at the Gijón International Film Festival.

He has recently completed the editing phase of a hybrid experimental film titled Azken izpia. In dialogue with that same film, and as a result of his artistic research, he published the book SEDIMENTA: A science (non)-fiction fairy tale about rocks.

In 2019, he did a residency in Tabakalera (Spain), and he was part of Berlinale Talents. He has received the Statens Kunstfond Working Grant in Denmark several times. In 2023, he started a fellowship at the Netherlands Film Academy. In 2025, he took part in the RAW: ARCHÉ→WORK residency. He has worked as a screenwriting tutor at the Laboratori Audiovisual Jove of the Reteena Festival (CCCB), mentoring feature-length screenwriting processes. His work has been shown at the Guggenheim Bilbao, Bozar Brussels, EYE Filmmuseum, Casa Velázquez, and Tabakalera, among other art institutions.

Juan Palacios (Eibar, 1986) es cineasta e investigador. Tiene formación en Ciencias Ambientales, Comunicación Audiovisual y una maestría (cum laude) en cine por la Academia de Cine de los Países Bajos. Ha escrito y dirigido varios largometrajes entre el documental observacional, el cine ensayo, la ciencia ficción y el cuaderno de campo, con especial atención al territorio en sus dimensiones físicas, culturales y afectivas.

Su primer largometraje, PEDALÓ (2016), producido por él mismo, tuvo su estreno mundial en el Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, donde recibió el Premio Irizar al Cine Vasco. MESETA (2019), un viaje sensorial por el paisaje de la España interior, fue premiada en CPH:DOX, L’Alternativa y la Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema de Pesaro, entre otros festivales. As the Tide Comes In / Før Stormen (2024), tuvo su estreno mundial en la Competencia Internacional del IDFA y fue la película inaugural de Visions du Réel 2024. Tras pasar por más de sesenta festivales internacionales, entre ellos Tesalónica, True/False, CPH:DOX, Gotemburgo y Camerimage, se distribuyó ampliamente en cines de Dinamarca y obtuvo el Premio a la Mejor Película Española y el Premio al Mejor Director Español en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón, además de nominaciones a los Premios Robert (los “Goya daneses”) y al Premio Bodil.

Recientemente ha cerrado la fase de montaje de una película híbrida y experimental llamada Azken izpia. En diálogo con esa misma película y como resultado de su investigación artística, publicó el libro SEDIMENTA: A science (non)-fiction fairy tale about rocks.

En 2019 estuvo como residente en 2deo de Tabakalera y formó parte de Berlinale Talents. Ha recibido en varias ocasiones la Beca de Trabajo del Statens Kunstfond (Dinamarca). En 2023 obtuvo una beca de investigación en la Academia de Cine de los Países Bajos, donde también ha trabajado como profesor invitado. En 2025 participó en la residencia RAW: ARCHÉ→WORK. Ha trabajado como tutor de guiones en el Laboratori Audiovisual Jove del Festival Reteena (CCCB), acompañando procesos de escritura de largometrajes. Su trabajo se ha mostrado en el Guggenheim Bilbao, Bozar Bruselas, EYE Filmmuseum, Casa Velázquez o Tabakalera, entre otros centros de arte.

Ha trabajado como director de fotografía en Como todo mortal, de María Molina, en The Clearing, de Sabine Groenewegen, en MESETA y As the Tide Comes In y en la segunda unidad de Anoche conquisté Tebas, de Gabriel Azorín, entre otras películas.
